The HSE certifications that matter in 2026: a curated guide
NEBOSH, IOSH, BCSP and BGC credentials are recognised worldwide. What each one is, who it suits, and how to plan your path.

A recognised credential is often the entry ticket to an HSE career and a key factor in promotion. But the landscape is crowded, and the right choice depends on where you work, your current level and where you want to go. This guide covers widely recognised options for 2026, with our selection criteria and practical advice. It is editorial, not a ranking.
How this list was made. This is an editorial shortlist based on public information: scope, recognition, availability and fit for typical HSE roles. We have not tested products or courses, received payment or ranked vendors against each other. Always confirm current details with the provider.
Our criteria
- Recognition by employers and professional bodies across regions.
- Independent assessment by an awarding body or credentialing board.
- Clear progression towards membership or chartered status.
- Availability through accredited providers, online and in person.
NEBOSH qualifications
The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH ( NEE-bosh)) is a UK-based examination board offering qualifications in health, safety, environment and wellbeing management.1 It was founded in 1979 and has charitable status.1 Its reach is global: Qualifications and courses are delivered by NEBOSH's network of approximately 600 accredited Learning Partners, which are located in countries around the world.1
The flagship International General Certificate has just been refreshed. The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety has been reviewed and updated for 2026.2 According to NEBOSH, Teaching of the revised syllabus’ will begin on 2 February 2026, with the first assessments taking place from 4 March 2026.2 If you are starting now, make sure your provider teaches the revised syllabus. NEBOSH also offers diplomas and specialist certificates, such as environmental and fire safety options, for those progressing further.
IOSH membership and courses
IOSH is the chartered professional body for health and safety in the workplace.3 IOSH has around 48,000 members, from over 130 countries.3 Its training network delivers well known courses including Leading Safely, Managing Safely and Working Safely.3 Membership grades lead towards Chartered status, which requires qualifications plus a structured professional development record. For many HSE professionals, a NEBOSH qualification followed by IOSH membership is a common route.
BCSP credentials (US-focused)
In North America, the Board of Certified Safety Professionals offers credentials such as the Associate Safety Professional. BCSP explains that ASP candidates may hold positions at the technical level or program management level and may directly supervise employees.4 An ASP may be called upon to coordinate safety activities, conduct basic safety analyses, identify hazardous situations, and recommend or oversee implementation of risk reduction measures.4 The ASP is commonly a step towards the Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
Industrial hygiene: BGC
For occupational hygiene, the former ABIH is now part of a broader body. On May 17, 2019, the American Board of Industrial Hygiene® (ABIH®) announced that it had changed its name to the Board for Global EHS Credentialing® (BGC®)5. Its credentials include the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Associate Industrial Hygienist (CAIH), Certified Professional Product Steward (CPPS), Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA), Certified Process Safety Auditor (CPSA)5 and others.
Risk management: IIRSM
The International Institute of Risk & Safety Management (IIRSM) is a UK-based professional membership organisation with a global footprint.6 It suits professionals whose roles combine safety with broader operational risk.
Planning your path
- Check local expectations. Look at job adverts in your target region and sector to see which credentials are requested.
- Start at the right level. Certificate-level qualifications suit newcomers and supervisors; diplomas and certifications such as CSP suit experienced practitioners.
- Choose an accredited provider. Confirm accreditation with the awarding body, not just the provider's website.
- Plan study time. Certificate courses typically involve several weeks of study plus assessment; diplomas take much longer.
- Join a professional body. Membership supports continuing development and recognition.
- Keep evidence. Record your experience and CPD from day one; it makes later applications far easier.
Specialist and sector credentials
Beyond general HSE credentials, sectors often require specific ones: offshore survival and emergency training in oil and gas, construction site cards, process safety qualifications, or environmental management auditing. Combine a general credential with sector-specific training for the strongest profile.
How personnel certification is assured
ISO/IEC 17024: Conformity assessment - General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons is an ISO/IEC standard which specifies criteria for the operation of a certification body for persons.7 The standard includes requirements for the development and maintenance of the certification scheme for persons upon which the certification is based.7 Accreditation to this standard is one signal that a credential is managed rigorously.
