Contact & expert directory

Some EHS work needs a third party — a legally-recognised atmospheric test, a water analysis, ISO certification support, an independent risk assessment or an environmental impact study. This directory points you, by subject, to a trusted company or expert. We’re building it now: until a name is listed, email us and we’ll connect you to a vetted contact.

Atmospheric & air-quality testing

Legally-recognised workplace air sampling — dust, fumes, solvents/VOCs, gases, CO/CO₂, oxygen and ATEX zoning.

What to check: is the lab COFRAC/ISO 17025 accredited for the specific pollutant you need (not just "accredited" in general)? Ask for their sampling method reference (NF X43, NIOSH, OSHA) and whether results include measurement uncertainty. Red flag: a quote with no method reference or no accreditation scope document.

💧

Water testing & analysis

Potable, waste and process water — microbiological and physico-chemical lab analysis, Legionella, discharge compliance.

What to check: does the provider list the specific parameters covered (pH, COD/BOD, heavy metals, Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1) against your discharge permit limits, not a generic "water test"? Ask for chain-of-custody documentation and turnaround time — Legionella culture alone takes 10-14 days.

📋

ISO certification support

Gap analysis, implementation and audit prep for ISO 45001, 14001, 50001, 9001 and 27001.

What to check: is the consultant distinct from your certification body (a consultant who also certifies you is a conflict of interest under ISO/IEC 17021)? Ask for references from a client certified in your sector, and whether they scope a gap analysis before quoting implementation — a fixed price with no gap analysis is a red flag.

⚠️

Risk assessment (specialised)

Independent or expert-led HIRA, machinery safety, ATEX, process safety (HAZOP) and quantitative studies.

What to check: for a HAZOP or quantitative risk study, ask who chairs the session — it should be someone independent of day-to-day operations, trained in the methodology (CCPS or equivalent), not just a generalist safety consultant. Ask to see an anonymised sample deliverable before engaging.

🌍

Environmental aspects & impact studies

Environmental impact assessment (EIA), aspects/impacts review, permitting (ICPE), ecological & soil surveys.

What to check: does the firm have prior EIA submissions accepted by your regulator (ask for a public reference file number)? For ecological surveys, confirm field visits are seasonally appropriate — a one-off winter survey cannot properly assess breeding-season species, which regulators will flag.

🔊

Noise & vibration measurement

Workplace noise mapping (LEX,8h), hand-arm / whole-body vibration, and environmental noise studies.

What to check: is the sound level meter/dosimeter calibration certificate current (annual, plus a field check before/after each session)? Ask whether they measure a full representative shift or extrapolate from a short sample — extrapolation from under 30 minutes is rarely defensible for LEX,8h compliance reporting.

🧪

Chemical & exposure monitoring

Personal / biological exposure monitoring, SDS authoring, chemical risk and control banding.

What to check: for personal exposure sampling, confirm pumps are calibrated on-site before and after each sampling run (not just annually in the lab), and ask which occupational exposure limit set they compare against (ACGIH TLV, OSHA PEL, EU IOELV) — the choice materially changes the pass/fail outcome.

🩺

Occupational health & medical surveillance

Fitness-for-work exams, audiometry, spirometry, biomonitoring and health surveillance programs.

What to check: is the examining physician licensed in occupational medicine specifically (not general practice), and does the program define surveillance frequency by exposure category rather than a flat annual schedule? Ask how results are kept confidential from the employer beyond a simple fit/unfit determination.

⚡

Energy audit & efficiency

Regulatory energy audits (EN 16247 / ISO 50002), metering and IPMVP measurement & verification.

What to check: is the auditor certified against the specific regulatory scheme you need (e.g. a recognised EN 16247 auditor list, or a nationally-registered energy auditor list)? Ask whether savings claims will be validated using an IPMVP option (A-D) with a stated baseline period — savings quoted without a documented baseline are not verifiable.

🔥

Fire safety & emergency

Fire risk assessment, extinguishing system design / inspection, evacuation drills and emergency planning.

What to check: for extinguishing-system inspection, is the technician certified by the equipment manufacturer or a recognised body (NFPA-aligned, or an approved-inspector list from the local fire-safety authority)? A genuine inspection report lists each device by serial number and next due date — a one-line "all systems OK" summary is a red flag.

🎓

Training & certification

Accredited EHS training — operator/forklift, electrical & work-at-height authorisation, first aid, NEBOSH/IOSH.

What to check: for authorisation-type training (forklift, electrical, work-at-height), confirm the certificate issued is recognised by name by your regulator or insurer, and that a practical/hands-on assessment component is included, not just a slide deck and a quiz. Ask for the certification credentials of the trainer delivering the course.

⚖️

Legal & regulatory compliance

Regulatory watch, compliance audits and permitting support for occupational, environmental and energy law.

What to check: does the firm maintain a regulatory watch service specific to your jurisdiction and sector (not a generic global feed), and can they show a sample compliance register entry with a legal text citation? For permitting support, ask about their track record of successful submissions with your specific regulator.
